Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada is the mountain range that rises over Granada. The peak of Veleta can be seen from practically anywhere in the city.

The people from Al-Andalus called it Sulayr—sun mountain—, due to how the snow glistens on winter days.

PROTECTED NATURAL AREA

Sierra Nevada has been a Natural Park since 1989 and a National Park since 1999.
It covers a vast area of the provinces of Granada and Almería. The southern slope is called La Alpujarra.

This natural environment offers a variety of ways to enjoy it: from skiing and climbing to discovering its nature and its picturesque mountain towns.

SKIING

The ski and mountain resort located here is the highest in Spain and the southernmost in Europe. It is located in the municipality of Monachil.

The road A-395 connects the city of Granada with Pradollano, the urbanization where the ski resort is located. The ski resort is fully equipped with hotels, apartments, restaurants, ski rental shops, ski schools, leisure activities, etc.

The area also offers plenty of activities in the snow for those who do not ski in the areas of Mirlo Blanco and Borreguiles, besides the leisure activities that take place in the residential area of Pradollano.

THE HIGHER MOUNTAINS

The higher mountains are aimed at people with previous mountaineering experience. Mulhacén with 3 479 m (11 410 ft), Veleta with 3 396 m (11 410 ft) and Alcazaba with 3 365 m (11 053 ft) are the highest peaks. The most emblematic hiking routes are the integral route of the 3 000-meters mountains and the Sulayr trail.

Both in winter and summer precautions should be taken, but especially in winter, when snow and ice are permanent.

There are also very attractive and simpler low and medium mountain areas in the villages of Pinos Genil, Güejar Sierra and Monachil.
