Day, Good Friday; time, three o''clock in the afternoon; venue, Campo del Príncipe. It may appear to be an appointment but actually it is a deep-rooted tradition passed on from one generation to another. Thousands of citizens of Granada answer the call to one of the most significant events of Holy Week, coinciding with the moment of the Redeemer''s death. Entire families – grandparents, parents and children – crowd the streets in a jam-packed "mantle" as they pray and make the customary petitions. Granada''s archbishop presides the act, offering a prayer in veneration of the Five Wounds of Jesus. He also alludes to the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary to pay reverence to the stone Christ in the middle of the square and to Our Lady of Sorrow, whose procession and penitence Station were held on Holy Tuesday night.

On Good Friday, a unique, heart-rending act is held in the Convent of Los Jerónimos at sunset. Figures in positions of power during the Inquisition, wearing feathered hoods and embroidered gowns, march to the sound of fanfare and drums at the head of the procession held by the oldest brotherhood of all, La Soledad Brotherhood, from the church of San Jerónimo. The procession is spectacular. Penitents in bright yellow pointed hoods are followed by a squad and troop of Roman soldiers thumping their spears on street, The procession also includes living figures representing the Three Marys, Our Lady, Saint Joseph, and Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, who carried Jesus' body to the tomb.
