José Guerrero was not only one of the most singular artists within American abstract expressionism, but also exercised considerable influence over the renovation of the Spain''s artistic panorama during the transition to democracy.

A centre of avant-garde art, it houses the works of this contemporary painter from Granada, charting his different creative epochs. José Guerrero is considered as one of the most important Spanish painters of the second half of the 20th century. The building was constructed by Indalecio Ventura Sabatell in 1892, following a design created by Modesto Cendoya, an exponent of eclecticism.

Constructed to hold a series of warehouses, it became a printers in 1901 and remained as such up until 1939 when it was used to house the workshops and offices of the Patria newspaper. It is located in the very heart of the city, next to the Alcaicería, the most important centre of commerce within the Moorish city, focused mainly on the silk trade.
