Respectful and impressive moments in the procession of El Silencio

The night of Holy Thursday is magical in the Albaicín. You can find the popular fervour for the neighbourhood''s three Virgins:  Our Ladies of La Concha, La Estrella and La Aurora. In the processional march of the Cristo del Silencio (Christ of the Silence), the crowds line the way in a respectful, eerie silence, mesmerised by the drumbeats.

Past midnight, the Albaicín becomes a shrine of images along the narrow streets, filling the neighbourhood with a special ambience, heady with incense. Our Lady of La Aurora, protected under a canopy made from the matador's costumes of two devout bullfighters from Granada (Mariscal and Montenegros), is accompanied along her route by penitents dressed in immaculate white gowns with red cuffs and a red sash.

The faithful who worship her during the year acclaim her as she passes through the narrow, winding streets of the Albaicín, cheering her on with cries of, "Aurora! Guapa, Guapa y Guapa!"
