Holy Saturday
It is the only procession held on Holy Saturday, an exclusivity that indicates the importance of the Alhambra in the city. The images on the processional floats are the Virgen de las Angustias (Our Lady of the Sorrows), the patroness of Granada (hence her importance), supported on a silver float representing the galleries in the Courtyard of the Lions; and the Señor descendido de la Cruz (Our Lord taken down from the Cross). It has become a tradition to walk up the red hill of the Alhambra and accompany the image as it makes its descent into the heart of the city. Our Lady embodies profound sorrow as she cradles the head of her recumbent Son.
The spectacular float leaves the Justice Gate in a brilliant display, as a volley of flares herald her exit. The return to the Alhambra is unforgettable, as it ascends the steep Cuesta de Gomérez hill, borne on the shoulders of the citizens of Granada, who join forces to march the heavy float up the exhausting but satisfactory stretch.
