Ever since the first Crosses were erected, it has been common to see a pair of scissors stabbed into a pero (an apple, in the dialect of Granada) at the foot of the Cross. Pero also means "but". Sentences like, "Está muy bonica pero..." (It''s very pretty but…) led to this ancient custom. It was a symbolic manner of telling visitors not to criticize the ornaments on the Cross by saying "but".
