Aljibe del Rey
The city's largest historical Arab cistern is a reminder of the importance of the system for channelling water in the Arab period
In view of its architectural style and location, it is believed that the cistern known as the Aljibe del Rey or Aljibe Viejo was built during the Zirid era. It is the largest Moorish cistern in Granada, boasting capacity to hold 300 cubic metres.
The cistern is divided into four chambers covered by barrel vaults and three central arcades. The interior of the cistern has been fitted out to accommodate visits, as part of the installations of the Carmen of the Aljibe del Rey.
